![]() ![]() If someone were to take over your primary sign in account, then you're already in trouble. The sign in providers could also have disagreements with the third party (see Epic using Sign in with Apple and then Epic suing Apple causing Apple to shutdown their developer account which led to uncertainty about what would happen to Epic's Sign in with Apple accounts). Apple/Google/FB are unlikely to shutdown but there was recent concern about Twitter which is also a sign in provider. Sign in With Apple is suppose to be more privacy focused and Apple makes it difficult for third parties to track people using Sign in with Apple (with unique user IDs per website and their Hide My Email feature), but Apple itself can still use that login information. Whether you believe that or not, if you are using Chrome or the site uses Google Adwords, Analytics, etc., then Google already has better opportunities to track you. The Google director in charge of Sign in With Google wrote in a tweet thread a while back that they don't use the login information to target you for ads (in response to people saying Sign in with Apple was more private). While Facebook and Google could use the login information to understand what websites you are using, the reality IMO is that they already have that information. The sign in providers usually support 2FA when most random websites do not, and (with the addition of Apple in the next OS releases), the popular sign in providers support things like hardware security keys.Īs far as privacy, leaving your email address with a random website is a risk for tracking (whether via a email/password login or via a sign in provider login). Intrusion detection is also probably not well implemented. For instance, a random website probably does not rate limit their login flow so brute force attacks are possible. all have better support for preventing account take over.
